Ex-Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich Weighs Run for Presidency

By    |   Thursday, 22 January 2015 06:14 PM EST

Former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich says he may pursue a 2016 presidential run based on the thundering approval he's received from Americans across the nation.

"I really don’t know what it's going to take, but I do know it's daunting and the odds are overwhelming and all that stuff," Ehrlich said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"But I do know when I go to a state and walk into a room … and when I finish they're lining up because they don't know who that guy is, but we like what he says, how he comes across, that's enough encouragement to get you to take the next step.

"So what I'm doing quite frankly is running around the country accepting speaking engagements and doing my thing."

Ehrlich — who served as the 60th governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007, and earlier served as a U.S. representative for the Old Line State's 2nd Congressional district — was chairman of Mitt Romney's Maryland campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

As far as Romney's indication that he may pursue a third try for the White House in 2016, and his meeting on Thursday with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who is also mulling a run, Ehrlich says it’s a question of wait and see.

"They occupy sort of the same philosophical space. Some would argue with that, but most people probably agree with that," Ehrlich said.

"[They are] both good guys, obviously, both very successful, both former governors. I like former governors. But we'll see. We'll see what happens."

Ehrlich — author of the book, "America: Hope for Change," published by Post Hill Press — added about his own aspirations:

"I have half a toe in I guess in New Hampshire, and now South Carolina, Florida. [I've had a] great response and those first three speeches really hit a chord … so we're going to continue to accept invitations, get around the country."
