Democrats in Congress are too busy playing politics to work with President Donald Trump and the Republicans on immigration, former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke told Newsmax TV.
Clarke was on Thursday's "America Talks Live" and said Trump needs to keep telling the American people how he feels about the immigration issue and getting a border wall built.
"The president knows that he's not gonna change any minds on Capitol Hill as it relates to Democrats, either [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi or [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer," Clarke said. "He has to convince the American people to get the American people behind him.
"The president sticks to policy, while the Democrats play politics. The president has to keep his eye on the politics, that's important, but he sticks to the policy. He's made the case, he made it the other night in a primetime speech before the nation, and he continues to hammer away. He's gotta win at the narrative of this."

Trump delivered a primetime address from the Oval Office Tuesday night that discussed immigration as the government shutdown, which will hit three weeks on Saturday, continues with no end in sight. The shutdown began in December after lawmakers could not agree on funding for a border wall.
Clarke said border security doesn't end with just a wall, however.
"The president's made it clear, it's more than just the wall," Clarke said. "There's some other aspects of domestic security that need to be done . . . he's laid some of that out. Of course, if you put up the wall they might find some other way. Then you go and you shore that up as well. This is gonna be an ongoing thing. This is just the start of it, but there is a huge problem."
