Rep. Brian Babin to Newsmax TV: Defense Veto Override Will Be Difficult

By    |   Wednesday, 23 December 2020 10:55 PM EST

Rep. Brian Babin, R-Texas, believes Congress would have a hard time mustering the two-thirds vote necessary to override President Donald Trump's veto of the National Defense Authorization Act, saying he will vote to support the veto.

Babin, 72, a three-term Republican who represents Texas' 36th Congressional District in the southeast portion of the state stretching from the Houston suburbs to the Louisiana border, told Newsmax TV on Wednesday he was in "lock step" with Trump.

"I'm going to support the president," Babin told "Rob Schmitt Tonight." "I can tell you this: It takes a two-thirds vote to override the president. I think they're going to have a hard time overriding him on a veto here."

Trump vetoed the annual must-pass legislation Wednesday, opposing a provision that would change the names of military bases that honor Confederate leaders, and also demanding lawmakers add a provision to repeal liability protections for social media companies.

"I'm a veteran of the Air Force and the Army, and I can tell you I support my military, but we have to protect the freedom of speech in this country," Babin said.
