Rep. Steil to Newsmax: Biden 'Incapable of Doing His Job'

By    |   Thursday, 08 February 2024 08:49 PM EST

Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., told Newsmax on Thursday that special counsel Robert Hur's report about Joe Biden's willful retention of classified documents after his vice presidency confirms what Republicans already know about the president's fitness for office.

"I think what it does is really confirm that President Biden is incapable of doing his job, whether or not that's the economic policies that are driving costs higher, an absolutely broken border that is clobbering Americans, or, in this case, where he's clearly holding classified documents in a wildly inappropriate and illegal manner," Steil said during an appearance on Newsmax's "The Chris Salcedo Show."

"So it's reinforcing what we already know, which is that the president is incapable of doing his job."

Released on Thursday, Hur's report found that Biden "willfully" retained and disclosed highly classified materials when he was a private citizen, including documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan and other areas of national security.

Nonetheless, no criminal charges are recommended for Biden, the Justice Department report said.

In declining to prosecute Biden, federal investigators concluded that he would likely be seen by jurors as a benign figure.

"We have also considered that, at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," investigators wrote in the report.

Hur's report also said criminal charges were not merited because of the fact that as vice president, and during his subsequent presidency when the Afghanistan records were discovered, Biden "had the authority to keep classified documents at his home."

Additionally, Department of Justice policy precludes criminal charges against a sitting president. The report maintains that the department "would reach the same conclusion" even if Biden were out of office and a private citizen.
