Buchanan to Newsmax TV: McCain Might Be Most Famous Senator Ever

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

The late Sen. John McCain might be the most famous senator to have ever served and his death leaves a void that the Republican Party might not be able to replace, Pat Buchanan told Newsmax TV on Monday.

Buchanan made the comments during an interview on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" show.

"I think what it does is it removes a senator who perhaps is as famous or more famous than any other U.S. senator of his time, with the possible exception of Edward Kennedy," Buchanan told Newsmax TV.

"His death sort of leaves a void in the Republican Party of the internationalists and interventionist wing. He was very much an internationalist and, if you will, he favored the democracy crusade of George W. Bush, which basically was rejected with the election of Donald Trump," Buchanan said.

"So, I think the future is going to have to search out another leader to replace him because John McCain in many ways was irreplaceable in terms of his ability to really reach the media and reach the country," Buchanan said.

"But I don't see who replaces him, to be very honest with you," Buchanan said.

Buchanan said he and McCain spent much of their political lives on the opposite side of many issues, but added it's the honor and dignity of McCain that should be remembered now.

"We were basically antagonists, but you respect the man for what he did in his life, for his service, the fact that he suffered for his country, that he ended his life in an honorable and dignified way, knowing that he had only about a year to live.

"And I think this is a moment to remember John, all the good things the man did," Buchanan said.
