Rep. Owens to Newsmax: GOP Will Be Stronger After Speaker Fight

By    |   Tuesday, 24 October 2023 10:34 AM EDT

The Republican Party will come out of the struggle to pick a new House speaker much "stronger than what we ever have been before," Rep. Burgess Owens told Newsmax on Tuesday.

The Utah Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America" that the entire ordeal over choosing a speaker has "been a crucible for the past three weeks," but reiterated the struggle will be worth it due to the party's renewed focus on what is important to the American people.

Owens said, "We have now come to a point where we recognize that we have to concentrate on the American people and be selfless" and are looking forward to winning the faith of the public again.

He emphasized that "sometimes you have to go through tough times to come out on the other side much stronger."

The Republicans are expected to meet again Tuesday in another attempt to choose a nominee for speaker.

Owens said he believes the Republican Party "will be done worrying about the individual issues that we were dealing with in this process and instead concentrate on the conference as a whole."

The Utah representative said he does have a favorite among the eight remaining candidates, but declared he would not reveal who that is and stressed he will vote for whomever the conference picks as the best choice.

Owens stressed that the party will only come to the floor once it has achieved a unified conference regarding the choice of speaker.

Once the struggle is over, Owens assured the public that the speaker himself will not be the issue, but that the GOP's focus will instead be on policies and fights against the direction of the Biden administration.
