Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., told Newsmax on Saturday that several Republican Senators breaking ranks to vote with the Democrats on key Cabinet positions prove that “there is a swamp, it is real, and it is bipartisan.”
Late Friday night, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth narrowly squeaked by to secure the post after three Republicans voted "no." GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky voted against their party in siding with the Democrats to oppose Hegseth. Vice President J.D. Vance was needed to serve as the tie-breaking vote.
Burlison said regardless of how they got there, “it’s a tremendous win.”
“And it's a win for the American people. Pete is the right man for this. It's great to finally have someone who was a combat veteran to be able to serve in this role, who is not one of the elitists in the military. He's someone that understands the perspective from the troops. And I think that he will serve very well in this role. And look, President Trump is demonstrating that he has the clout and the authority to get it done,” Burlison said during an appearance on “Saturday Report.”
The representative from Missouri’s 7th congressional district said it’s important to remind the public that Republicans do not have much, if any, of a majority in Congress.
“But I want to remind everyone — when people think we have a majority, just look at those senators that are quote unquote Republican that voted against this nomination. That should demonstrate to people that we truly we don't truly have a majority. There is a swamp. It is real, and it is bipartisan,” Burlison added.
