Charles Hurt: Lack of Access Angers White House Press Corps

Wednesday, 19 March 2014 07:33 PM EDT

The Obama administration's banning of the press from covering first lady Michelle Obama's trip to China this week is just the latest outrage in a growing lack of access, Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt says.

"I can say with absolute certainty I've never in my life heard so much outward disgruntlement among White House reporters about this issue of access," Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"After eight years . . . they are actually speaking out against the Obama administration," Hurt said Wednesday.

Story continues below video.

This week, the White House announced that the first lady would not take questions from reporters or give any interviews during her tour of China, which is now in progress. Members of the press corps also cannot travel with her entourage.

"It's just absolutely astonishing, but I really don't think President [Barack] Obama cares and I don't think that his staff cares," Hurt said.

"They don't believe in the same sort of openness that most of us believe in."
