The head of the Republican Party in Chicago on Friday said Mayor Lori Lightfoot is handling the violence in her city like a “hockey goalie" and that a drive-by shooting at a funeral changed her mind in allowing federal agents to assist police officers.
“I think the mayor goes somewhat like a hockey goalie, by whatever is flying at her at the moment,” Steve Boulton said during an appearance on Newsmax TV's “Greg Kelly Reports.”
“And what was flying at her at this moment was that a funeral on the south side of Chicago, rival gang members pulled up in front of a crowd of unarmed people, stepped out of a car, and opened up with machine gun fire there on the crowd, wounding 14 or 15.
“And when an instance like that happens on the streets of Chicago at a funeral, even Mayor Lightfoot is going to have to face the truth, that there’s going to have to be a radical change in what’s happening here, if these killings, and these gang killings, are to stop before the entire city gets shot up.”
President Donald Trump earlier this week said he was planning to deploy federal agents to Chicago and possibly other Democrat-run cities as he continues to assert federal power and use the Department of Homeland Security in unprecedented, politicized ways.
Lightfoot initially met the announcement with derision.
However, following Tuesday’s funeral home shooting, Lightfoot relented, and has allowed additional FBI, DEA, and ATF agents to assist local police.
“We need federal officers. We’re very grateful to the president that he’s doing it,” Boulton said. “We accept his help gratefully and we’re simply astonished that the mayor of Chicago initially actually tried to fight this program, when this city needs every law enforcement officer it can get its hands on.”
