Donald Trump's inauguration gave the country a boost of optimism, Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-Tenn., told Newsmax on Tuesday.
"It was something … America needed," Fleischmann said on "Newsline." "I know I needed it. We needed a rebirth of optimism in this country. That's what Donald Trump is going to provide. America is back. We've got a good, strong executive in that role. I look forward to helping the Trump agenda."
Under Trump, America is again respecting the rule of law, especially with securing the border, Fleischmann said.
"Joe Biden hurt this country," Fleischmann said. "He hurt it because he incentivized illegal immigration. And sadly, it worked. And when it worked, he realized it was a problem for this country and then could not or would not solve it. Donald Trump did that yesterday with a pen, undid some of the damage that Joe Biden did."
Fleischmann said it will take years to fix Biden's damage.
"We owe it to the American people to secure our borders," Fleischmann said. "Probably one of the worst things Joe Biden did. He put our country at risk by enticing illegal immigration and all its problems, all of its costs. It's going to take a while to reverse it, but it started immediately."
Democrats who oppose Trump's agenda need to understand the American people have rejected them, Fleischmann said.
"They will lose big time in two years," Fleischmann said. "We need to listen to the American people. Donald Trump did. And I sure hope that Democrats finally do. But it's going to take some time."
