Larry Wilmore Nabs Colbert's Spot on Comedy Central

Comedian Larry Wilmore, the sardonic "senior black correspondent" on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," is taking over the time slot being vacated next year by Stephen Colbert, reports said Friday.

"The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore" will debut in January 2015, Business Insider reports.

"He’s a spectacular talent in front of and behind the camera,” Michele Ganeless, the network's president said in a statement.

"'The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore’ follows in the Comedy Central tradition – bringing new perspectives to the day’s events and breaking ground in the world of late night television."

The announcement ends speculation about the fill-in for the Monday-Thursday 11:30 p.m.-to-midnight time slot currently occupied by "The Colbert Report." Colbert has been named David Letterman's successor on CBS' Late Show.

Wilmore has been appearing on "The Daily Show" since 2006, both as anchor and commentator, Business Insider noted.

"I’m beyond excited to have this chance to continue my relationships with Comedy Central and the brilliant Jon Stewart," the L.A.-based Wilmore said in a statement. "I love the city of New York and promise to only wear my Laker T-shirts when I’m layering."

"The Minority Report" was created by Stewart and will be produced by Stewart’s Busboy Productions, with both Stewart and Wilmore as executive producers, Variety reports.

But for now, Wilmore is planning to stick with a new ABC comedy, “Blackish,” starring Anthony Anderson, to get it up and running, Variety reported.

Wilmore started as an actor and standup comedian before turning to writing and producing, Variety reported, winning an Emmy for writing the pilot episode of “The Bernie Mac Show." He also received a Peabody Award and a Humanitas Prize for his work with “Bernie Mac.” He also hosted the 2012 Showtime series “Larry Wilmore’s Race, Religion & Sex.”
