Florida Prosecutor on Lewandowski Case: 'We Did the Right Thing'

By    |   Friday, 15 April 2016 05:30 PM EDT

Palm Beach County (Fla.) State Attorney Dave Aronberg told Newsmax TV on Friday that while he is a Democrat — and is seeking re-election — "politics didn't enter our deliberations" to possibly prosecute Corey Lewandowski in the Michelle Fields case.

"Although I'm a registered Democrat, that's not a surprise," Aronberg told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "My political leanings are public, but once we step foot in the state attorney's office, there's no politics because it's all about doing justice."

Aronberg, 44, a Hillary Clinton supporter who was first elected in 2012, said Thursday that his office would not move forward on the simple battery charge brought by the Jupiter Police Department in Florida against Donald Trump's campaign manager last month.

"We just based it on the facts of this case," he told Hayworth. "We had to make a determination on whether a reasonable jury would find him guilty — and we said no that this may not even get to the jury.

"The process was nonpolitical," Aronberg said. "Ethically, we could not file this case.

"We did the right thing."
