It's possible to both keep people's lives and livelihoods safe during the coronavirus pandemic, Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV.
"There is risk to reopening too soon, but Texas and other states are showing you can do it. You can protect lives and livelihoods at the same time. Here in Texas, we're now on our third week [of being reopened], the governor's reopening more as of today and Friday," Kevin Brady told Tuesday's "The Chris Salcedo Show."
Brady said while the rates of positive coronavirus tests in Texas have gone up, it's due to more testing in prisons, senior centers and meatpacking districts, which means the state has increased its testing. Overall, he said Texas has a lower infection rate than in the past.
"Our infection rate is down two-thirds from its peak in April. It's down 15% since we reopened Texas, and as importantly, we've been fortunate because of good work by Governor Abbott and others, our death rate per capita is the lowest of all the top 10 states with cases," Brady said. "To put it in perspective, New York's fatality rate is one out of every 800. In Texas, it's about one in every 1000."
Brady added: "So we're showing you can reopen, you can keep the pressure on the virus but you can help get people back to work as well."
