Democrats have the issues of immigration and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program all wrong, writer and former Reagan administration adviser Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV.
"It just never ceases to amaze how Democrats are so off key on this issue," Lord said during an appearance on "Newsmax Now."
"Let's just reduce this to its essence. This is about borders and border security, and there isn't a country in the world that doesn't have a border, and not only that, when you bring it down to personal safety, most people have locks on their doors, they have locks on their car doors, and they don't just put an ad in the paper that says 'come on in and I'll pay for your healthcare' to their house."

Lawmakers have yet to come to an agreement of how to deal with the 700,000 or so DACA recipients, people who came to the United States illegally as children with their parents. DACA was said to be one of the key points that led to the government shutdown over the weekend. Lord said being against illegal immigration is not the same thing as being against immigration as a whole.
"This is a country that is 100 percent descended from immigrants – this is not about being anti-immigrant," he said. "Everybody has had somebody who came here the first time. That's not what it's about.
"It's about how you come in legally or not and waiting in line and coming in and then not immediately glomming onto the welfare system when you get here. But trying to bring something to the country. That resonates with an awful lot of people."
