North Korea has the satellite capability to strike the United States, but "it shuts down the infrastructure," Georgia Republican Sen. David Perdue told Newsmax TV on Friday.
"An EMP doesn't take out the population," Perdue, 68, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told Newsmax TV's John Bachman in an exclusive interview. "It shuts down the infrastructure.
"It would definitely affect 90 percent of the country. We think they have that capability."

Former CIA Director James Woolsey told Newsmax exclusively Thursday that Pyongyang already had an "electromagnetic pulse bomb" that could wipe out 90 percent of the U.S. population within a year.
Perdue told Bachman that the biggest challenge for the U.S. is that "right now, we need help in terms of dealing with North Korea.
"The president has done a great job with President Xi [Jinping] in China by putting pressure on them to get help," he explained. "We're getting some now.
"Both these presidents, President Xi and President [Donald] Trump, have similarities," Perdue added. "They really do, and President Xi now has consolidated his power.
"We have two leaders now that can put China and America on a path toward cooperation while still protecting each other's own national interests, which includes a solution for North Korea."
However, the United States also must get Russian President Vladimir Putin to further pressure North Korea, the senator said.
"I don't think anybody in the neighborhood over there wants to see a nuclear weapon on the peninsula of Korea."
