Dianna De La Garza, the mother of Demi Lovato, spoke with Newsmax TV on Tuesday about her recent memoir, "Falling with Wings: A Mother's Story," which details her family's struggles with mental illness and addiction.

Lovato, 26, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 24 of this year. She entered an in-patient treatment facility Aug. 4. Later that month, a source told People magazine the Grammy-nominated singer is "doing great" in recovery.

De la Garza, author and former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, told "America Talks Live" about her daughter's hospitalization, with Lovato's blessing.

Lovato's assistant at the time, Kelsey Kershner, was the one to break the news to de la Garza over the phone.

"She said, 'Demi overdosed,'" de la Garza recalled. "So, I was in shock. I didn't know what to say, it was just something that I never, ever expected to hear as a parent, about any of my kids. And I hesitated to ask, but I had to ask her, I remember it just seemed like the words took forever to come out of my mouth. I said, 'is she OK?'

"And [Kershner] stopped for a second, and she said, 'she's conscious but she's not talking.' And so I knew that we that we were in trouble."

"I can honestly say today that she is doing really well, she's happy, she's healthy. She's working on her sobriety and she's getting the help she needs, and that in itself encourages me about her future and about the future of our family."
