Dick Morris: GOP Senate Needs 'Nuclear Option' to Stop Democratic Gridlock

Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Prime"

Donald Trump might control the White House, but "my concern is that he does not control the Senate," political strategist Dick Morris told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"You need 60 votes to control the Senate — and we'll have only 52," Morris told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "The Senate Democrats can filibuster any time that they want and stop legislation.

"Some things like healthcare reform or the budget can be gotten through under a fiscal reconciliation and just take 51 votes, but that's rare.

"High on the agenda is that Trump and [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell have got to get together and repeal the filibuster," Morris told Hayworth. "They'll get the 51 votes — that's all you need to pass the Senate — or 50 with the vice president's concurrence.

"Unless they do that, they are headed for more and more gridlock."
