A Missouri urgent-care physician and microbiologist says critics are wrong to say he is unnecessarily scaring people by warning about an Ebola outbreak in the United States.
"People need to be scared," Dr. Gil Mobley said Thursday on Fox News Channel's
"Your World with Neil Cavuto."
Mobley arrived Thursday morning at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport wearing a HAZMAT suit with the words "CDC IS LYING!" written on the back.
He told reporters for
The Atlanta Constitution he wanted to show that authorities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are underestimating the threat Ebola poses to developed nations.
"For them to say last week that the likelihood of importing an Ebola case was extremely small was a real bad call," he told the Constitution.
On the day the CDC made the statement, a Dallas hospital sent a man back home who was later found to be the first Ebola case diagnosed in the United States, he said on Fox.
"Once this disease consumes every third world country, as surely it will, because they lack the same basic infrastructure as Sierra Leone and Liberia, at that point, we will be importing clusters of Ebola on a daily basis," Mobley told the Atlanta paper. "That will overwhelm any advanced country’s ability to contain the clusters in isolation and quarantine. That spells bad news."
Mobley was critical of President Barack Obama's assurances that Ebola, which the CDC says can be transmitted only by close contact with someone showing symptoms, won't become a major outbreak in the United States.
The doctors "where the rubber meets the road" don't agree with Obama that the threat is minimal, Mobley said.
He suggested "fever centers" be set up for anyone showing a high temperature at an emergency room to keep them away from other patients.
"The CDC is asleep at the wheel," he said.
As for the claim that Ebola is hard to catch, Mobley told Fox News that if a person shakes hands with someone with Ebola who has a fever and then wipes his or her eye, "you're dead meat — 90 percent chance."
