Rep. Doug Collins to Newsmax TV: Dems Leap 'Accusation to Verdict'

By    |   Friday, 15 January 2021 01:42 PM EST

One of the most notable defenders of President Donald Trump during the House Democrats' first impeachment, former Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., is no longer in office and is lamenting that America has to go through this all over again.

"I'm sad for our country," Collins told Newsmax TV's "John Bachman Now" on Friday. "From last week and everything going on, the Democrats are doing exactly again in impeachment what they did, frankly, in the first one, and that was a judgment to do something even if they had to break rules, bend rules, and not follow procedures."

House Democrats are the ones abusing their power in Congress, Collins told host John Bachman, making the jump from "accusation to a verdict" without due process in issuing an article of impeachment on the president for allegedly inciting the storming of the Capitol.

"Where is the process here?" Collins asked. "This is not a country where you go from simply an accusation to a verdict."

Democrats are seizing power and using extenuating circumstances to justify it, Collins continued, pointing to Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief proposal after the past Congress had just passed a large package just weeks ago.

"It goes back to the old saying, the Democrats especially: 'Never let a good crisis go to waste,'" Collins said.

Citing Georgia as an example, the former representative said American businesses need to be allowed to reopen and get back to work, not merely take government subsidies.

"We've responsibly opened the state back up over time," he said. "The people of Georgia did that; they did it with the direction of government down here, but the people understand we have to get back out.

"Government has got to understand it is not the solution to every problem, and if it becomes the solution everybody is going to think they only have to go to the government, and that's not what America is founded on."
