Doug Schoen to Newsmax TV: More Legislation, Fewer Executive Orders

By    |   Saturday, 23 January 2021 12:20 PM EST

A divided Congress needs more bipartisan legislation, not more presidential executive orders like the ones we received in the first week of the President Joe Biden's administration, according to Democrat strategist Doug Schoen on Newsmax TV.

"We can't do this with one party," Schoen told "America Right Now." "I'm for keeping the filibuster, so we maintain a degree of bipartisanship built into the system.

"But I also think we need to legislate, not use executive orders as a means of governing. We'll be a better country as a result."

Ironically, after years of political division, perhaps a divided Congress might be the way to grease the bipartisan work going forward, Schoen told host Tom Basile.

"We need robust debate on issues like immigration and healthcare, and bipartisan solutions," Schoen added. "We also need a bipartisan tax reform initiative."

This comes as House Democrats – with 10 anti-Donald Trump Republicans – have taken the "political risk" in sending another impeachment to the Senate that will likely ultimately fail.

"In an ideal world, Joe Biden would not be dealing with impeachment," Schoen said. "The problem is it was voted on a bipartisan basis by the House of Representatives. The former leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear he sees the argument for impeachment. Whether or not he votes for conviction is a very different question, but he's indicated sympathy with the argument.

"So we have to go forward in some way and we got to get it out of the way quickly."

Schoen admits impeachment is not an issue that would "really matter to the American people" like healthcare, immigration, and tax reform.

"I wish we could move on beyond an impeachment trial, but I think, sadly, we're going to have to have it," Schoen said, blaming Trump for the division that led to the storming of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6.
