Many were silenced during the COVID-19 pandemic "if they had an opposing view to Dr. Anthony Fauci's or the Biden administration," said Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga.
"A lot of people were silenced. They weren't listened to if they had an opposing view to Fauci or the [Biden] administration. They were silenced. They were censored. They were discredited," McCormick said Wednesday during an appearance on Newsmax's "Spicer & Co." when asked what his takeaways were following the Wednesday hearing of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
"They ignored a lot of science when they approached this," said McCormick, who worked as an emergency room physician before being elected to Congress. "They didn't try to do a balanced scientific approach. They just wanted to have a political discussion."
The committee heard from Dr. Robert Redfield, who served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under former President Donald Trump, and two other witnesses invited by Republicans.
Redfield called for a moratorium on "gain of function" research, or research that improves the ability of a pathogen to cause disease, saying it "probably caused the greatest pandemic our world has seen."
McCormick said it's concerning Fauci and others at the CDC continued to conduct gain of function research.
"It's concerning they continue to cling to this, that they continue to ignore the science. They continue to say there isn't any evidence," he told Newsmax.
"There's plenty of evidence that there was gain of function. Matter of fact, the very thing that they predicted and asked to do is what happened. It's not hard to figure out. And yet they want to say it came from an animal, whether it be a bat or a dog. Yet despite the Herculean efforts by the Chinese government to capture a wild animal with the same disease they say it came from, they can't produce one shred of evidence. Yet they say that's the more likely cause. It's insane."
Fauci and the Biden administration want to "ignore the science, ignore the facts, and not get to the bottom of this because they want to cover up their own mistakes and make this political so we cannot learn from our own mistakes; and that's the most frustrating thing about this," McCormick added.
