Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., decried the omnibus spending bill that was promoted as an economic relief/stimulus measure to blunt the impacts of the damage wrought by the novel coronavirus, dismissing it and some of his Republican colleagues for not joining him in opposing it.
"You had all of these ridiculous things added into in what was announced as a COVID-19 relief package, but we have $10 million for a gender program in Pakistan, you have $1.4 billion to Egypt, which you know they're going to take that money and buy Russian equipment, military equipment with," Steube told Newsmax TV's "Stinchfield."
"You have all sorts of these other things, completely unrelated to the COVID-19 pandemic stuffed in there."
Steube, 42, who easily won a second term in November to represent the 17th Congressional District in south central Florida including Sarasota, said the bill was sold as a COVID-19 measure so it would be difficult politically to oppose — but combined with the omnibus bill to get pet projects approved.
President Donald Trump opposed the measure, called on Congress to rewrite the bill to eliminate the special projects, and threatened to veto it, but ultimately ended up signing it.
"I applaud the president to bringing [the unrelated spending] to light, which is why a lot of us Republicans, not as many as I thought, voted against it," Steube said.
