Any drug or vaccine created to help treat the coronavirus will be done ethically, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Newsmax TV.
During an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV's Emerald Robinson that aired on Thursday's "American Agenda," Azar said the federal government is working with "well-established platforms" to come up with a vaccine.
Azar was responding to concerns people have expressed about a proposed vaccine containing DNA or being affiliated with Bill Gates. There has been a conspiracy theory Gates is planning to use a future COVID-19 vaccine to implant microchips into people to track their movements.
"We certainly want to make sure all of our vaccine research or any of our drug research is ethical and appropriate," Azar said.
To make sure any vaccine is developed following the proper channels, he said the government is working with "companies that are reputable and that have done this before."
"We are picking platforms that are the safer bets in terms of demonstrated track record of success on what we call the vector of how the actual vaccine is administered," he said.
In the event a successful vaccine is developed, he said all data related to it will be available for public review.
"The data behind any vaccine that demonstrates safety and efficacy is going to be public information," he said. "So that data will be there for doctors, for academics, for individuals to study."
