North Carolina Congressman Richard Hudson told Newsmax TV on Tuesday he was confident the Republican National Convention will be held as scheduled in Charlotte in August as the state emerges from restrictions imposed by Gov. Roy Cooper to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Hudson, a Republican who represents the 8th Congressional District just to the north and east of Charlotte, was responding to an introduction by Spicer & Co. host Sean Spicer that mentioned President Donald Trump’s tweet on Monday.
The post stated that Cooper, a Democrat, needed to “immediately” give assurances as to whether “the space will be allowed to be fully occupied” or the convention would have to be moved.
Cooper responded via Twitter saying “state health officials were working with the RNC.”
“We’re really counting on this convention to be a huge economic impact on our region, on our state,” Hudson said. “I think the president was right to raise the question. I think he made a reasonable request, that we need some assurances from the governor, but I believe the convention is going to stay in Charlotte.
“I think we’ll be able to work through it.”
