Liz Truss to Newsmax: Immigration Issue Appalling in UK

By    |   Wednesday, 22 January 2025 06:49 PM EST

The immigration issue in Britain is "appalling," says former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss.

"We've got shortage of police resources, but they are knocking on journalists' doors at the weekend to complain about tweets that they're putting out," Truss told Newsmax TV's "Carl Higbie: Frontline."

"And people in Britain are very, very angry about this. [UK Prime Minister] Keir Starmer has a 16% approval rating because people can see there are massive problems, but no one is talking about it because we've got the BBC which covers up all of this stuff and needs to be defunded.

"I heard you talking about PBS, but the BBC is an even bigger problem in Britain. It is the Britain bashing corporation. It needs to be defunded," she added.

Immigration has long been a major political question in Britain, with voters expressing concern that large influxes put excess pressure on housing, education, and the state-run National Health Service, as well as damaging social cohesion.

In 2010, Conservative then-prime minister David Cameron pledged to bring net migration back to tens of thousands a year, a target he never came close to reaching.

Ending the free movement of people into Britain from other European countries was a major factor that led to the 2016 vote to leave the European Union, with those championing Brexit promising it would help bring back control of Britain's borders.

However, net migration, which reached 329,000 in 2015, has continued to rise.

Information from Reuters was used in this report.
