Rep. Comer to Newsmax: Administration Pretends There's No Border Crisis

By    |   Tuesday, 07 February 2023 01:02 PM EST

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, heading into Tuesday's first committee hearing on the border situation, said on Newsmax that the Biden administration wants to "pretend like there's not a problem."

"Republicans have been defending the Border Patrol for two years now, during the entire existence of the Biden presidency," the Kentucky Republican said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "We hear from rank and file Border Patrol agents all the time about how this administration's policies are tying their hands and how the Biden administration's turned the Border Patrol into the welcoming committee."

But every day, Comer said, the Border Patrol is forced to deal with the influx of migrants flooding across the border, which then allows drug smugglers to bring in dangerous substances like fentanyl.

"It happens every day, multiple times a day, all across the southern border," said Comer. "Yet this administration wants to pretend like there's not a problem, so we're going to try to get it in public, the facts and figures of how bad the problem really is and what Congress can do to help the Border Patrol do what its job is supposed to be."

Comer also commented on the downing of a Chinese spy balloon over the weekend, saying that even though China is insisting that it was a civilian aircraft and an unexpected incident, "who knows what Joe Biden" believes is the truth?"

"The reason we're investigating the Biden family is that they've taken millions and millions of dollars from China, and it's hard for me to believe that China didn't expect anything in return for giving the Biden Center for Diplomacy all of this money," he said.

The congressman pointed out that the balloon flew over five military bases on its cross-country trek, and the "odds of that happening just generically are slim to none."

"We have questions for this administration," he added. "When did they know this balloon had entered the American airspace, like when it came through Alaska? Why didn't this administration act sooner?

"We know this administration has not protected the homeland. We know our southern border's wide open. We're going to hear today that our northern border is wide open as well."

And with the balloon, Comer said, there is now a fear that the U.S. airspace "may be wide open" and that "we may not have a government that is keeping up with our airspace to make sure that we don't have adversaries coming into our country through the air."

Comer, who has been pushing for deeper investigations into Biden's son, Hunter, and the findings from his laptop, also on Tuesday noted the "twisted turns" in the case, after Hunter Biden acknowledged that the laptop was his, while his attorney said the contents of it may be his, but the device may not be.

"Nobody can believe anything that Hunter Biden's lawyers are saying right now," said Comer. "We're going to get to the bottom of this with our Biden family influence-peddling investigation, and that is the strategy. Whatever it is, it makes Joe Biden look terrible."
