Hillary Clinton "lied to the American people" and the email scandal that is engulfing her run for the Democratic presidential nomination "could be her downfall," Republican candidate Jeb Bush told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"This email scandal is truly remarkable," the former Florida governor told "Newsmax Now" hosts J.D. Hayworth and John Bachman. "This could be her downfall."

"I'm not a lawyer," Bush cautioned. "I don't follow how this all will play out, but she lied to the American people. It required a subpoena for us to find out that she was using a private server.

"Confidential and classified information went over her private server because it was more convenient for her in her pursuit of her personal ambitions at the expense of national security," he told Newsmax. "I don't know what the legality is, but that certainly is beyond improper.

"And then she misled the American people. She can't be trusted.

"If you can't trust the president of the United States, then how can he lead or she lead?" Bush asked.

"You have to have the trust of the American people or you'll be completely ineffective."
