Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Newsmax TV on Thursday that "I don't know what happened on that" regarding news reports that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, whom he fired last week, was investigating him on disclosures to Congress about his Russian contacts.

"I was pleased that they issued a statement saying that's not so," Sessions told "The Todd Schnitt Show" in an interview.

ABC News reported Wednesday that McCabe was overseeing a federal criminal investigation into whether Sessions lacked candor when testifying to Congress last year about his dealings with Russian officials.

Justice Department officials said Sessions did not know about the probe until reading news reports.

However, Russia special counsel Robert Mueller's office told Chuck Cooper, attorney for Sessions, that he was not under investigation.

"The Special Counsel's Office has informed me that after interviewing the attorney general and conducting additional investigation, the attorney general is not under investigation for false statements or perjury in his confirmation hearing testimony and related written submissions to Congress," Cooper said in a statement.

Sessions fired McCabe on Friday, two days before he was to become 50 and eligible for retirement, citing the unauthorized release of information to the media and not being forthcoming with Justice Department investigators in how the FBI handled the Hillary Clinton email inquiry.

Sessions told Schnitt that McCabe's actions were "investigated without my knowledge — or the president's knowledge, really — through the normal process.

"They made a recommendation," he added. "The FBI recommended he be terminated.

"The recommendation, by law, went to me.

"I agreed," Sessions said, "and he was terminated."
