Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial will "split the country more in half."
Van Drew told "American Agenda" that Trump's second impeachment "isn't constitutional" since "he is no longer the president. This is what I have said all along, I said, instead of even doing the first impeachment, completely splitting the country apart, hurting everybody, really making enemies out of Republicans and Democrats."
He went on to say the United States "became such a harsh and angry country, so much of it was due to that impeachment proceeding procedure. Now, here we are again with an individual, President Trump, who is out of office. And the purpose of impeachment is to remove somebody from office, but he already has served his term and is out of office. We're just going to try to impeach him mainly out just for the heck of it, and it makes no sense at all."
Van Drew concluded, "So, I think it's so unfortunate. I don't think it's what we want to see. I don't think it's the future of America. We have too much. That's too mean spirited. There's not enough bipartisan cooperation in general, and this is not going to increase bipartisan cooperation."
