The immigration issue has long festered in the United States because Democrats have "closed both eyes and pretended that the law isn't there," former 2016 Republican presidential candidate Jim Gilmore told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"I don't think that anybody at this point wants to take a young person who has never been in a foreign country in their entire knowledgeable lives and send them to a foreign country," Gilmore, who also once served as Virginia's governor, told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker.

"But on the other hand, this has been a problem that's been festering for years and years — and the Democrats have closed both eyes and pretended that the law isn't there.

"So, these kids are in trouble now because nobody has come forward and tried to resolve it," he said.

"This president is at least exercising some leadership, but he's also being responsive to the American people, who expect a law to be obeyed.

"They don't expect to have a system in place that's going to let everybody in the world come to this country and become a citizen," Gilmore told Tucker. "I don't think that's what Americans want."
