Sen. Cruz: 'Mistake' for Biden to Skip 9/11 Ceremonies

By    |   Monday, 11 September 2023 09:37 PM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday that it was a "mistake" for President Joe Biden to skip this year's ceremonies memorializing the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Joining "Rob Schmitt Tonight," Cruz was unsurprised at the development, noting that "this is the same president" whose Pentagon floated plea deals for the attack's architects to avoid the death penalty.

"I think it's a mistake. I think the president has an obligation to tell the American people what it was about, to bring them together," Cruz said before outlining the now-tabled proposed deals for the 9/11 defendants.

The administration said last week it would not guarantee military prosecutors' proposed deals with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged chief architect of the attacks, and his co-defendants.

While short of closing the door on another one with augmented conditions, it serves as a significant hurdle to the deals – believed to be motivated by the defendants' allegations that they were tortured in detainment.

Before the administration reversed course, Cruz and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., sent a letter condemning the deals when first informed of the Pentagon providing families of 9/11 victims a disclosure about it.

"I spoke out loudly against it. Millions of Americans were horrified. And thankfully, the outcry was great enough that it appears they've backed away from that plan," Cruz noted.

"But when it comes to this administration and foreign policy, they've put politics ahead of everything," he continued. "And so, this administration doesn't want to talk about 9/11. They want to put 9/11 behind them."

Cruz also drew parallels between the treatment of the 9/11 defendants and the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, which was timed to occur before Sept. 11, despite concerns from officials.
