Democratic Strategist: Contraceptive Ruling a Boon for Fundraising

By    |   Tuesday, 08 July 2014 01:10 PM EDT

Lawmakers are using the recent Hobby Lobby Supreme Court contraception decision as an opportunity to raise money for the upcoming midterm elections, and Democratic strategist Joe Lestingi predicts that it will be a boon for Democrats.

"Everyone wants to raise money off of this because elections do have consequences," Lestingi told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"This can be a good opportunity for Democrats to frame their message," he said. "Especially the one they want to get across to a very key swing bloc, which are women, across the country in these key states.

"It gives them an echo chamber to build their narrative, which is exactly what they're doing," he added.

According to the senior political strategist from The Chadderdon Group, "every election in this country is decided by women between the ages of 35 and 55."

"They are the swing group," he said. "And this is an issue that resonates with them," and while they can still get access to contraception, "they have to pay for it, where other people get coverage for free."

Republican analyst Katrina Pierson says she's "really glad that the Democrats want to use this particular issue considering how they're kind of being smacked around by the Supreme Court right now," adding that "they really are using more divisive issues."

Whether this issue will benefit Republican candidates will depend on "whether or not the GOP can message this appropriately," adding that Democrats are "just manipulating women, trying to trick them into supporting Democrats on an issue that does not even exist."
