Joe Walsh: Immigration Vote Will Only Anger GOP Base

By    |   Friday, 22 June 2018 02:31 PM EDT

Newsmax TV’s Joe Walsh says House Republicans are playing with fire in their quest to vote on an immigration bill.

"It’s a mess. I wish they would leave it alone and not vote on it," the former Illinois congressman who hosts "The Joe Walsh Show," weekdays at 9 p.m. ET, said on Newsmax’s "America Talks Live."

On Thursday, leaders in the GOP-led House of Representatives delayed for a second time -a vote on the so-called compromise Republican plan after lawmakers failed to resolve differences on key issues.

The bill would put Dreamers on a pathway to citizenship, fund construction of President Donald Trump's U.S.-Mexico border wall and require immigrant children be kept with their parents pending deportation rulings.

The House is now shooting for next week. But Walsh said passing the legislation will likely cause a big headache for the GOP in the midterm elections this fall.

"If the Republicans in the House pass that compromised bill, that amnesty bill, I think it will suppress their vote in November," he said,

"It will piss off the Republican base, it will anger conservatives all over the country and they won’t come out and vote in November … It’s the wrong thing to do."

On Friday, Trump urged Republicans on Capitol Hill drop the bill for now.

"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November," Trump said on Twitter.

"Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem. We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!"
