Yet another impeachment is "backfiring," as the Senate is unlikely to convict and political division will only spur President Donald Trump's voting base to retaliate at the ballot box, according to Trump campaign pollster John McLaughlin on Newsmax TV.
"It's backfiring," McLaughlin told Thursday's "Greg Kelly Reports." "What they're doing on impeachment, people see it is unfair, unconstitutional, going against the president.
"They really want them to deal with the coronavirus."
McLaughlin appeared with constitutional legal expert Alan Dershowitz, who derided Democrats for "trying anything" to disqualify Trump from running in 2024, "that they're prepared to twist and turn and destroy the Constitution."
Dershowitz added to host Greg Kelly, "I care more about the Constitution than I care about any politician or any political party. And no matter who is a victim of unconstitutional acts, I am going to stand up for their rights."
McLaughlin's polling shows widespread support for Trump and Dershowitz's legal view.
"It's having no impact on his base, in fact, it's just solidifying them and making them angrier or more upset," McLaughlin said of impeachment efforts.
"Because the people outside the Beltway agree with professor Dershowitz."
McLaughlin noted polls show 75% of battleground voters believe the Senate's latest impeachment trial of a former president is "a waste of time, money."
Specifically, in Wyoming, the home state of Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., 70% consider this impeachment "unconstitutional," as Dershowitz has repeatedly warned.
"What she has done, with one vote, has blown apart her political base," McLaughlin told host Greg Kelly.
McLaughlin asked voters in Wyoming if they would reelect Cheney, No. 3 in the House GOP leadership, and only 13% said yes — including only 6% of President Donald Trump voters, he noted.
Also, he said, Trump voters give Cheney a mere 14% approval rating. Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans to side with Democrats on impeaching Trump for "incitement of insurrection."
