The media covering President Donald Trump has "behaved like the resistance" and it has gone "over the top," according to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl on Newsmax TV.
"Too much of the news media during the Trump era has behaved like the resistance, at least has appeared like the resistance," Karl, also the president of the White House Correspondents' Association, told Thursday's "The Chris Salcedo Show." "That is not our job. We are not here to be opposed to Donald Trump.
"We are not supposed to be players in this drama. We're supposed to report the facts."
Karl provides an in-part stinging review of his colleagues in the WHCA he leads, promoting his new book "Front Row at the Trump Show," but admitting "the last thing I would do is go and tell fellow reporters how to do their jobs."
"I do call out some of my colleagues," Karl said of his book, including a rebuke of CNN's Jim Acosta, one of the chief resistance activists in the WHCA.
"I do take issue with the way he has approached covering Donald Trump," Karl added.
The "relentless negativity" of those covering Trump's White House has damaged the "credibility" of media, Karl told host Chris Salcedo in a wide-ranging interview.
"Much of the coverage in the past three years has been relentlessly negative," Karl said. "I think there's no question about that.
"It's all been kind of fever pitch, 'oh my God, look at what Donald Trump just did,' and I think that hurts the credibility of a news organization, if you're always consistently wound up into the latest outrage, not reporting some basic facts.
"Controversies are fair game, but sometimes it has gone a little bit over the top."
