One-fifth of President Donald Trump's voters last November backed Barack Obama — and they remain loyal to the current commander-in-chief, pollster Larry Sabato told Newsmax TV on Thursday.
"Trump has lost almost none of his backers, including the soft Trump voters," the director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics told host Steve Malzberg on Facebook Live in discussing new survey results. "He's still got 92, 93 percent of them supporting him.
"It's also true that he hasn't gained many people from the other side," Sabato added. "We live in a very polarized era.
"It's awfully tough to get people to change sides.
"What I found fascinating, and no one else has identified this, is that 20 percent of Trump voters actually voted for Obama either in 2008 or in 2012 — or in both years.
"In other words, a fifth of his vote came from Obama voters.
"That tells you how many defections there were from Hillary Clinton," Sabato said. "It's even higher than most people had guessed."
