MyPillow founder and CEO Mike Lindell restated his intention to run for the governorship of Minnesota on Newsmax TV on Wednesday, saying he was “90-some-percent” after seeing how the Democratic Party could “ruin cities and ruin states.”
Lindell, 58, a native of Minnesota who operates a factory southwest of Minneapolis to produce his bedding products under the MyPillow brand – promoted with TV commercials starring himself, said as recently as June 1 to Newsmax TV that he was “leaning” to running.
But on Wednesday, he sounded even more certain on “Greg Kelly Reports.”
“I’m 90-some-percent. Let’s put it that way,” Lindell said. “In Minnesota, right now, the way things are, everyone, even the Democrats, they’re all going, ‘Wow, look at the leadership we’ve had. It’s all Democratic.’ They’re flipping. They’re making it look pretty easy for me to run.
“I come from a past of addition, so I didn’t pay much attention to politics. But what I’ve learned in the last five-six years is, like, this is incredible, how one party can ruin cities and ruin states.”
Lindell specifically referred to Minneapolis, parts of which have seen significant damage caused by riots following the death of a black man, George Floyd, in police custody on Memorial Day. Floyd died after being arrested for using a $20 counterfeit bill at a grocery store and a widely seen video shows a white police officer restraining Floyd with his knee on Floyd’s neck.
Critics have claimed the video was evidence of systemic racism in law enforcement and sparked riots and protests, not only in Minneapolis, but across the country.
“The mayor of Minneapolis let all this go on, and now, what’s your solutions?” Lindell asked rhetorically. “Now your solution is you’re going to defund the police department? And these guys are down there going, ‘Wow.’ I’ve got some over here going, ‘Wow, I guess crime is what we can do now. We’ll just do whatever we want. ‘
“And the other ones are going, ‘Who’s going to protect us?” I think what it’s really showing is how, it’s just opened up how bad the leadership is and not just Minneapolis but around the country in these Democratic cities.”
Republicans have been elected governor 26 times in Minnesota, the most of any party, but none since 2011. Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party member Tim Walz is the incumbent, elected in 2018.
