Actress Maria Conchita Alonso — ousted from the cast of a controversial play after supporting a tea party candidate's campaign for governor of California — says Hollywood treats her worse than it would Fidel Castro.
"It is true, it is true! . . . It's a group of people [who] live in great, beautiful mansions, [and] what they want to do is control you, they're communists. I'm a huge communist fighter," Alonso told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"I'm helping those that are good, but those that are not should be kicked out," she said Monday.
The "Moscow on the Hudson" actress dropped out of the Spanish-language version of "The Vagina Monologues" in San Francisco after backlash over her appearing in a campaign advertisement for Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, of San Bernardino County.
"We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately," play producer Eliana Lopez said.
Numerous Latino organizations criticized her involvement in the ad, which they think reinforces negative stereotypes.
Alonso, who is of Cuban and Venezuelan descent, is seen standing next to Donnelly as she translates his lines into Spanish. She is holding a chihuahua she calls Tequila, and uses vulgar terminology.
Alonso says she still believes in Donnelly despite the controversy.
"He wants to bring good things to California. I am pro-that. He wants to bring work, he wants to raise the minimum wage. All these things are very much needed in this state," she said.
One thing that I've been attacked mostly for is because he has opposed immigration . . . I want to help those people who are already here and don't have papers but they've been paying their taxes. They're good people, they don't have a criminal background,'' she said.
"The ones that I don't want to help are the ones that are here and that are a burden to this country and did not help to make this country better. [Donnelly is] someone that listens."
Alonso said she has been "insulted . . . criticized, I've been called a racist and anti-immigrant, I've been called a hypocrite, which [I am] not. I'm a big defender of human rights, I'm a big defender of helping people," she said.
