Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., told Newsmax TV on Thursday that it’s critical that the United States regain its manufacturing dominance, likening it to a war with China that “we are losing.”
In an interview on “Greg Kelly Reports,” Green said he hopes a piece of legislation he has backed will help win that fight.
In a letter sent to congressional leadership, Green urged the inclusion of incentives for American companies to move back from China by allowing them to expense 100% of moving costs.
"Anything that hurts their economy, destabilizes their leadership,” he told Newsmax TV, adding the Trump administration can “do that by getting those companies out of China and back in the United States.”
He traced the start of the manufacturing loss in the United States to the deal between Motorola and Huawei in 2011, when a pair of lawsuits were settled, clearing the way for Motorola to complete the sale of its networking division to Nokia Siemens Networks.
The deal, Green said, translated into a “loss in the GDP” that was “enormous.”
"That's the war that's being fought," he declared. "We are losing."
He says his own legislation will help incentivize that move back.
"You think about what it takes to move a manufacturing plant in China to the United States," he said. "We have to help you and one of the latest pieces of legislation I've got right now ... a tax credit basically ... so it would basically offset the cost of the move."
