The former GOP governors of Wisconsin and Virginia on Thursday ripped into Democrats — particularly Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer — for pushing back on protesters eager for a business reopening, saying there's a political motivation for the resistence.
In an interview with ex-governors Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Scott Walker of Wisconsin on Newsmax TV’s “The Chris Salcedo Show,” McDonnell joked “It’s not the way Scott and I would have governed.”
McDonnell said Democrats are looking ahead to the election in their calculation of reopening.
“You look at the health care risks, … trends… suffering of small businesses… and you balance those and you get the most people back to work in the safest manner possible,” he reasoned.
But he noted, “when economies are down, incumbent presidents lose."
There’s a “political motive for keeping people home,” he said.
Walker agreed, saying the situation illustrates the divide between “ people who believe in government and people who put their faith in the American people.”
“We need to stop suspending common sense,” Walker urged.
He noted that for two months essential businesses have been open “without mass infection.”
Scott also blasted some Democrats’ desire in Congress to extend unemployment for those who lost jobs because of the coronavirus.
“Extending the unemployment… suggests the Democrats believe the economy should be shut …all the way through presidential election,” he said.
Both governors also hailed the decision of the Wisconsin Supreme Court to strike down that state’s stay at home order.
McDonnell said it was an example of “extraordinary abuses” taking place in an extraordinary time .
“That is not a carte blanche… to restrict people,” he declared.
Walker agreed, and took credit for appointing conservative judges on the panel.
“They did the right thing,” Walker said. “The rule of the law must be upheld even in an emergency,” and that such orders must “involve the legislature and the [state] Supreme Court called them on it.”
“It’s the right thing to do,” he said.
