Former Rep. Michael Patrick Flanagan says President Donald Trump must clean out the bad elements of the FBI and be "brutal" about doing it.
"You have a banana republic secret police whose job is regime preservation not law and order preservation and Trump is going to clear it out," Flanagan, an Illinois Republican who now heads a lobbying and public policy firm in Washington, D.C., told Newsmax TV's JD Hayworth on Friday.

Earlier this month, Trump trashed the FBI, which is involved in special counsel Robert Muller's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election.
Flanagan said Trump is on the money.
"Our president is afraid of very little that's for sure. Right into the belly of the beast to look at them and say to them 'I believe in you, I believe in the concept — and I believe your leadership was picked by the previous administration to serve the regime, not to serve the people,'" Flanagan told Hayworth.
"And that's what you got at the FBI now … [Trump is] going to have to go through it personally. It's going to be brutal. Mueller is not going to just walk away, but he's going to win at the end and the FBI is going to get cleaned out."
Flanagan also believes that Attorney General Jeff Sessions needs to be shown the door.
"Jeff Sessions is going to have to find something else to do with his life. He's gone native. He believes in the concept of the Justice Department and he thinks that it hasn't changed much. It has," Flanagan said.
"You need a rough and tumble guy. My vote is for [Sen.] Ted Cruz."
