Michael Reagan on Tax Reform: 'Make It Simple, Stupid'

(Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now")

Monday, 27 November 2017 07:08 PM EST

Political commentator Michael Reagan on Monday blasted the inability of Republicans on Capitol Hill to get simple tax reform accomplished — and took Democrats to task for ignoring the growing federal debt.

the son of former President Ronald Reagan told Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" he hoped the GOP tax reform effort would be passed — without repealing the state and local tax deductions now allowed.

"My accountant says if you owe nothing, this is a great tax bill for you," he said. "But if you're an owner, then it's probably going to raise your taxes in the future and my taxes will of course go up, because I won't have the write-offs that I have today."

It would be better if Congress could pass a flat-tax bill, he said.

"Make it simple, stupid," he chided. "But in fact, the Republicans have trouble getting together in a phone booth, and you're seeing it all work out in Washington, D.C."

He also decried Democrats for doing nothing while the federal deficit skyrocketed.

"Name the last Democrat who railed against an increase in the amount of money we owe in the federal debt," he said. "They never mentioned the debt for eight years . . ."
