Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's strategy of lining up delegates in states where front-runner Donald Trump won most of the popular vote might seem unfair to those unfamiliar with the process, but it's just "part of the game," Michael Reagan tells

"It is hardball. It's sharp elbows, that's what it is," Reagan said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show." "We went through it in 1976, went through it in 1980, 1984. It's the way the game is played."

Trump "finally woke up" and realized he had to hire people who understand the process, Reagan said, and not just fly in on his private jet, hold a big rally and leave.
"He hired people who understand the process, Paul Manafort, others, to try and fix what he wasn't looking at," Reagan said. "He thought being applauded was enough to win. He found out it takes a lot of grunt work to win."
