Rep. Mike Garcia, Who Flipped Dem Seat, to Newsmax TV: District Ready for Leadership

Mike Garcia, the former Navy combat pilot who flipped a blue seat to Republican red last week when he won a special election in California's 25th District to replace Democrat Katie Hill, says the district was ready for leadership.

Hill left the seat in 2019 following a scandal involving her relationship with an aide.

“We had all the right ingredients. There’s nothing cosmic about it,” Garcia said Thursday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.”

“We had a strong grassroots campaign with an excellent ground game, a fantastic team and frankly, a district that was ready for leadership at the right time, someone who was a political outsider who believes in low taxes and doing the right things for small business owners. That message resonated strongly.”

Garcia, the first Republican in 22 years to flip a democrat seat in California to red, also praised President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and says his focus is on making sure the district is taking care of constituent services during this time.

“We haven’t had a federal rep here in our district for about 8 months. So that’s the priority – helping small businesses and individual citizens survive COVID-19 locally. We should all hope for the best for our country and leadership across party lines and that all levels of government succeed right now. …

“That’s the spirit of this campaign.”
