Opposition to sending National Guard troops to the United States' border with Mexico is due to ignorance and push back to anything President Donald Trump does, Mark Krikorian told Newsmax TV.
During an appearance on "Newsmax Now," Krikorian — the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies — said people are misinformed about what the National Guard has the ability to do.
"This is not National Guard troops with rifles patrolling the border – it doesn't work that way," Krikorian said. "What National Guard can do — and again, as you said, this is something Obama and Bush did — is they can support the Border Patrol and free up agents to do the actual patrolling.
"National Guard can't arrest people on the border. It doesn't work that way. They do all kinds of intelligence and surveillance, reconnaissance, as well as even back office-type processing stuff."

There are also people who dislike everything Trump does, which Krikorian said is another group that does not support the administration's plan to use National Guard troops to help protect America's southern border.
"If President Trump said showering daily is a good idea, there are people who would stop showering just because Trump suggested it," Krikorian quipped. "So, I think some of it is actually that kind of [Trump] derangement."
The Pentagon said this week the National Guard troops will not carry out armed patrols or arrest illegal border crossers while they are deployed.
