The Nazi regime diabolically used of gun control to disarm and repress its enemies and consolidate power, according to historian Stephen Halbrook, a research fellow at The Independent Institute.
"The story begins in the 1920s, the Weimar Republic. There was a lot of political violence and they thought they can do something about it," Halbrook said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on

"They had the same gun debates as today, but then they thought if they can license gun owners and register them, that would help calm things down."
Halbrook — author of the new book
"Gun Control in the Third Reich: Disarming the Jews" and "Enemies of the State" — said the Nazis ruthlessly suppressed ownership of guns by disfavored groups and even imposed the death penalty in some cases.
"Of course, the communists and the Nazis who were fighting each other didn't register," he said.
"They didn't think they needed a license for anything. That was their attitude."
