Rep. Malliotakis to Newsmax: Lawmakers Getting 'Zero Answers' on Drones

By    |   Sunday, 15 December 2024 11:26 AM EST

Lawmakers are getting "zero answers" from the Biden administration concerning the drone sightings over New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and other locations, which shows the government "knows exactly what is going on," Rep. Nicole Malliotakis told Newsmax Sunday.

"You're hearing Republicans and Democrats, United States senators, members of Congress, governors, mayors who are frustrated because our government is not providing us with any information for our constituents," the New York Republican said on Newsmax's "Sunday Report."

And even with "as incompetent" as the administration has been, including last year when a Chinese spy balloon was allowed to cross the country and hover over military installations, Malliotakis said she doesn't think the drone sightings would be continuing if someone other as the government wasn't behind them.

"I don't know if they're doing some type of surveillance [or] if they're doing some type of counterterrorism, but the reality is they need to let the public know what's going on," Malliotakis said. "They certainly need to let members of Congress know what is going on."

Lawmakers have been requesting briefings, classified or otherwise, she added, and it is "just unacceptable" that information is not being provided.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told ABC News' "This Week" Sunday that the federal government has deployed personnel to address the drone sightings, and said that people may be seeing more of them at night because of changes in the FAA's rules that allow drones to fly at night.

But Malliotakis said she doesn't "believe a thing" he says.

"This is the same guy who told us that our border was secure and that they were vetting individuals coming into our country," she said. "He is probably one of the most incompetent officials in the entire United States government. Secondly, I don't as far as I know, FAA regulations do exist that they cannot fly these drones between dusk and dawn. And also, if they do, they need a government waiver to do so."

Further, the drones that have been seen are "sophisticated" and are not hobby or commercial aircraft, said Malliotakis.

She added that she's particularly concerned about the drones since New York City is heavily populated.

"These things are flying above the Verrazano Bridge, above our military installations, above houses, above buildings, and there could be an accident," she said.

And when the government is not being transparent, many theories are circulating about the drones, she said.

"The best way to kill misinformation is by being honest with the American people, so that's all we're asking for," said Malliotakis. "They should at least be addressing the concerns of the people. Remember, you work for us. It's not the other way around."
