Rep. Gohmert: Obama Not Taking Ebola Seriously Enough

Wednesday, 08 October 2014 06:32 PM EDT

President Barack Obama is not taking the Ebola crisis as seriously as he should be, says Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas.

"He told everybody we didn't have anything to worry about and at the time he was saying that we apparently already had our first Ebola patient here," Gohmert said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It is something to be concerned about. It's a deadly disease and it needs to be taken seriously. This president seems to have trouble taking anything seriously.

"Whether it's Ebola, whether it's our border security … you have to have people that are charged with providing for the common defense [and are] actually serious about doing that."

Gohmert — vice chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations — spoke shortly after it was revealed that the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the U.S. died Wednesday morning in a Texas hospital.

Thomas Eric Duncan was pronounced dead at 7:51 a.m. at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, where he was admitted Sept. 28 and has been kept in isolation.
Gohmert said other countries are being more vigilant about the Ebola threat.

"Countries that recognize that they have an obligation to protect their people, regardless of whether or not it's politically correct, have done just that," he said.

"We used to have quarantines of serious diseases that would kill people but this day in time, gee, we don't want anybody to feel like they're being left out.

"Some of my Democratic friends, including this president, feel like we want everyone to feel included. So let's don't quarantine, let's don't close our borders."
