Political commentator Oliver North drew parallels between riots in the 1960s over race and the Vietnam War with ongoing unrest over the death of a black man in police custody, telling Newsmax TV that those who led the demonstrations half a century ago are in charge today.

“The guys who were burning their draft cards when my brother and I went off to Vietnam in 1968 and 1969, the same guys are now running country,” North said on “Greg Kelly Reports.” “They’re the mayors, the city councilmen.

“The mayor of your city, in New York City, was actually working with the Nicaraguan communists when we were trying to support the communists’ opponents.”

North, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel who also served on the National Security Council in the Reagan administration, was referring to Bill de Blasio, who was an ardent supporter of the Nicaraguan Sandinistas, visited Nicaragua during the country’s civil war and was a member of the Nicaragua Solidarity Network of Greater New York, which raised money for the Sandinistas.

The 76-year-old North, who has written several books including his most recent, “The Rifleman,” an historical novel set during the Revolutionary War, said the current protests and current climate of removing statues and rebranding of buildings and streets named for historical figures from the Confederacy worries him about how history will be taught to his 18 grandchildren.

“I’m very concerned that they won’t even know that there was a Civil War,” North said. “Because here in Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, where our governor (Ralph Northam), bluntly here he is, a baby-killing, gun-grabbing race-baiter, who is now tearing down every statue of every single Confederate soldier they can find. We’re changing the names of all of our roads. “
