Republican House members gravely erred in sending a warning letter to Iranian leaders in defiance of President Barack Obama, according to conservative pundit and best-selling author Pat Buchanan.
"The Republicans made a real mistake in sending this letter … It's almost unarguable," Buchanan, a senior adviser to Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford, said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on

"What they seem to be doing is seeking to sabotage any deal before Barack Obama's even brought it home. As someone who's served in three White Houses, the president's got the right to really conduct foreign policy.
"And the Senate, of course, has the right to basically reject or not reject what he brings home and also to lift sanctions or not to lift sanctions if that's included in the deal, but sending this letter was a mistake."
The letter to Iranian government officials stated that even if Iran and its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei strike a deal with Obama to limit Tehran's nuclear program, it won't last without congressional approval.
It was signed by 47 GOP senators, including Tom Cotton of Alabama, who drafted the letter, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and presidential hopefuls Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Marco Rubio of Florida.
"They got 47, not all the Republicans. What they're doing is they're antagonizing many of the Democrats who are going to be part of their veto-proof majority if they veto the deal and the president does bring it home," Buchanan said.
"I don't think this was wise and it wasn't wise to bring a foreign leader into the State of the Union forum to basically attack the foreign policy and a deal the president hasn't even brought home."
